Marinelife & Other Natural History Links

The Cretan Animal Welfare Group

Gaynor, Michaelis and the rest of the team at "The Haven" in Malia do the most wonderful work in assisting cats, dogs and any other animal in trouble.  They deserve all our praise - and some help!

Digital Nature

Hailing from Holland, Jelger and Maaike are on a mission to capture as many birds and reptiles as possible - capture them in their camera lens, that is! Their digital images are of amazingly high quality due to their painstaking efforts. Well done to both of you!

Hellenic Centre for Marine Research

This institute carries out much important research in a wide diversity of areas concerning the marine environment.  It is also responsible for the construction of the largest aquarium in Greece, in Gournes, Crete, which is on-going at the time of writing.

FishBase

FishBase is a quite amazing collection - photos (which you are free to use), descriptions and info by the tonne - if you need to search for a common name, a scientific one or just potter around in a fantastic "joining together" of fish information - this is the place!

Crete Western Wildlife Watch

A fascinating site "Dedicated to help record and promote the wildlife of Crete" and best described in their own words: "At present an informal group, open to anyone (anywhere) with an interest in wildlife at whatever level. We will try to help beginners and welcome input from more experienced sources. The main aim of the group is to help record and promote Crete wildlife. This fledgling website is a start."

Flowers of Crete

"Crete is an island full of flowers, many of which are endemic and many of which can now be found in gardens throughout the world. Most famous of all these flowers are the wild, terrestrial orchids which can be found throughout the spring months, growing everywhere in an amazing abundance. Whether you favour daisies, lilies, anemones or crocus, Crete has plenty to offer." Learn more about these flowers and organise trips to see them on this site.

FloraCretica

Another wonderful site for people who simply care about nature - Cretan plants and flowers this time! Again, I believe their own words best describe their efforts: "FLORACRETICA is non-governmental, not-for-profit organisation currently in the process of incorporation as a charitable trust in Greece. Our members are not all scientists or even botanists; the majority are just interested in the plant life here and come from all sorts of backgrounds. Our logo is the rare and endangered Androcymbium rechingeri, the Minoan Lily." A must for botanists of all shapes and sizes!

It is my great pleasure to introduce you to Lou Duro - a New Yorker who has resided in Crete for many years and who is a great poet, story-teller and friend.
